Theodent

DEVELOPMENT

The academic research behind Theodent was first conducted in the 1980s by Dr. Tetsuo Nakamoto, co-founder of the company and professor at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He studied the effects of dietary ingredients on prenatal teeth. In collaboration with professors Alexander Falster and William Simmons, experts in analytical geology, Nakamoto discovered that fat-free and sugar-free dark chocolate helps prevent the development of caries in the early stages. They discovered that enamel remineralization occurs due to theobromine, a cocoa extract similar in structure to caffeine, effective in fighting caries and strengthening tooth enamel. The finding led to extensive research and the creation of Rennou’s revolutionary formula, the active ingredient in Theodent toothpaste.

In 2007, Dr. Arman Sadeghpour took the research of this important discovery a step further. As part of his doctoral dissertation at Tulane University, he tested theobromine on human teeth and compared the properties of cocoa extract and fluoride for strengthening tooth enamel. The research confirmed Dr. Nakamoto’s previous finding. Interest in the product prompted scientists to commercialize the technology. Theodent LLC was founded by Sadeghpour and Nakamoto in collaboration with William Simmons and Joseph Fuselier. The company’s first commercial product was launched in 2012. The company now has three patents issued in the U.S. and a third global patent pending. Theodent LLC supports the Center BioInnovation New Orleans. It is a non-profit business incubator, a hub for bioscience companies in Louisiana. The organization supports teams developing innovative medical devices, diagnostics, therapies, digital health platforms, clean technologies, etc.

TECHNOLOGY

The basis of the revolutionary RENNOU formula is theobromine, a naturally derived substance extracted from cocoa beans. Theobromine has antibacterial properties and actively promotes enamel remineralization. It promotes the formation of hydroxyapatite crystals, the main component of tooth bone tissue. In addition, these new hydroxyapatite crystals, which form on the surface of exposed dentin and within the dentinal tubules, are four times larger and stronger than previous ones and much more resistant to external acids (wine, juices, fruits, etc.). Compared to fluoride, which incorporates into the tooth, cocoa extract strengthens and enlarges the crystals that make up the tooth, resulting in more robust enamel. Theobromine is completely safe for health and far exceeds the effectiveness of fluoride (71 times less theobromine is needed compared to fluoride for the same results). Thus, Theodent toothpaste, with regular use, eliminates problems with tooth sensitivity and stops the development of caries in the early stage. All ingredients in the Theodent formula work closely together, ensuring high product effectiveness. Thus, in addition to theobromine, the toothpaste also contains calcium acetate, which establishes a positive calcium balance, and sodium phosphate, a buffer for calcium absorption and hydroxyapatite crystal growth. It also contains ingredients to fight bad bacteria.

Xylitol is necessary to prevent caries, as it inhibits the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and helps neutralize the acidic environment in the mouth.
